What *you* can do to help during Hurricane Harvey (yes, you)
By now, you've likely heard that Hurricane Harvey is hitting Texas really hard right now and having a devastating and lasting impact on the Southern state. It's estimated that Houston alone has received 25 inches of rain since Saturday and shows no signs of slowing down. According to CNN, they could see another 25 by Saturday and as of very early Monday morning, two have died due to the hurricane and that number is sadly expected to rise.
Watching the news and reading articles during events such as these can make you feel helpless, and as if there's nothing in the world that can make a difference for people who are suffering so much right now. But there are things that you can do. Take a look at the resources below and do what you can to help.
Make a financial donation to Catholic Charities of USA. To do so, go to CCUSA's website or text 71777.
When in doubt, look toward the American Red Cross. To donate money, visit their website. You may also call 1.800.RED CROSS or (even easier) text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Tell your parents about the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, which was created by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. The money you donate here will be administered by Greater Houston Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. If you'd like to give, you may do so at the GHCF. Click here for their website.
You can also donate to the Salvation Army three ways: visit www.helpsalvationarmy.org, call 1.800.SAL ARMY or text STORM to 51555.
GoFundMe also has an entire page of campaigns directly-related to Hurricane Harvey that you can donate your money to.
We also suggest asking the churches, community centers and schools in your area what you can do to help even if you're not in Texas.
